Kevin Hernandez is a partner with ScottMadden where he specializes in the grid edge and energy storage. Since joining the firm in 2012, he has consulted with a variety of transmission and distribution utility clients on issues ranging from post-merger integration to distributed energy resources. Kevin earned a B.A. from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, an M.A. from the U.S. Navy War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and an M.B.A. from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He is also an eight-year veteran of the United States Navy.

  • Assisted a leading global heavy-duty truck manufacturer in the development of an electric truck total-cost-of-operations model and strategic plan for transitioning its customers from diesel to electric vehicles

  • Assisted a New York utility in the development of its bi-annual distributed system implementation plan as part of the Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) proceeding
  • Implemented energy storage and hosting capacity demonstration projects, including RFP development, system design, financial modeling, and procurement process design for demonstration projects to validate the potential of new technologies to increase the penetration of DER on a utility distribution system
  • Implemented a governance model and project management structure by which to manage a major investor-owned utility’s response to ambitious regulatory proceedings related to clean energy, distributed energy resources, and alternative ratemaking
  • Facilitated the design of future state business processes and organization design required to implement new and novel utility business models as part of a major state regulatory proceeding
  • Developed and implemented a process to identify, evaluate, and procure non-wires alternatives to traditional solutions to defer grid infrastructure at a northeastern distribution utility. Supported the procurement of non-wires alternative solutions to four distribution infrastructure projects
  • Assisted in developing utility filings in response to a major state regulatory reform proceeding to incorporate DERs and develop alternative utility business models at a distribution utility
  • Benchmarked renewables processes and organizations of 14 electric utilities identifying the key drivers, processes, and organizational designs for utilities according to renewables mix, penetration of distributed generation, and state compliance requirements
  • Designed and implemented changes to online and outage work management processes at a major nuclear operator to increase scope stability, more closely align scheduled work to available resources, and reduce the amount of work dropped between scope selection and execution. Stood up a team to recover dropped work, reducing churn and increasing ready work execution
  • Project managed the design and implementation of tools, processes, and governance needed to reduce the number of nuclear plant planned-maintenance work orders generating with parts holds due to incorrect Cat IDs on model work orders at a major nuclear generator
  • Supported the standup and operations of a program management office (PMO) during the redesign of a major northwestern utility’s budgeting and accounting systems and processes, including the return to standard of the organization’s budget, finance, and controlling SAP enterprise resource planning suite
  • Worked within the PMO to develop a project governance and accountability structure and PMI-aligned project management processes to guide development of scope, schedule, and cost baselines, risk mitigation, variance analysis, change control, benefits realization, and organizational change management for use in establishing enterprise-wide project management standards
  • Provided PMO support during the acquisition of a Fortune 500 electric utility transmission business. Managed the integration of functions, processes, and organizational structures of nine transmission business units, including operations, asset management, and engineering functions
  • Project managed the design and implementation of a major IT system to support the redesign of a core business process of a top 10 academic institution. Guided key stakeholders through the business process design and development of detailed system requirements. Designed and implemented a robust change management and communications process successfully increasing process compliance and data accuracy
  • Analyzed and performed an organizational redesign of a major electric utility’s transmission and distribution field organization taking into account future infrastructure and service locations, current and planned FTEs, skill sets, workload forecasts, and transmission/distribution splits
  • Developed a detailed market analysis in support of a major nuclear energy services company’s planned introduction of a new SMR reactor design in the Indian nuclear power market. Performed detailed regulatory, political, and market analysis identifying significant opportunities for SMRs in India
  • Performed an analysis of the financial reconciliation process of a top 10 public university. Identified process improvements which resulted in a 41% reduction of reconciliation transaction volume and the streamlined management of more than $600 billion in assets per year
