Telecommunications VoIP and Data Circuits

Whole-System Transition

  • Planning the transition to upgraded, modernized telecommunications network of more than 100 circuits

Minimized Disruptions

  • Prevented downtime during transition to upgraded networks of critical equipment

Optimized Cost Savings

  • Identified short- and long-term cost savings opportunities within the transition to modernized equipment and systems

Challenge

A midsize southwestern utility was upgrading all legacy carrier phone numbers to a new VoIP system and in turn, consolidating telecommunications circuits. However, some circuits supported critical equipment, remote locations, and orphan telephone numbers that needed to be classified and prioritized before porting. Leadership was looking for cost reductions via consolidation, upgrades, contract reviews, and bill terminations.

Process

  • Inventoried 9,000 phone numbers and more than 100 circuits across 18 different carriers
  • Assessed VoIP-porting accessibility and criticality by engaging subject matter experts
  • Researched orphan numbers to minimize business disruption
  • Engaged carriers for porting coordination, bill consolidation, and contract renewal
  • Defined and investigated issues preventing realization of ~$45K cost reduction

Result

  • Classified cost savings opportunities for short-term (~$40K) and long-term (~$60K) project goals
  • Ported 4,670 telephone numbers equipped for VoIP and initiated bill consolidation
  • Proposed path forward for issue resolution to achieve maximum savings
