Challenge
Utilities across the energy sector are investing in digital technologies but lack standardized methods to measure the value of these initiatives. Without a structured framework, it’s difficult to assess maturity, prioritize investments, or demonstrate value beyond financial ROI.
Process
- Partnered with EPRI and utility stakeholders under the Digital Transformation Research Initiative (DXRI) to identify capability and impact metrics for digital programs.
- Conducted interviews across nuclear, fossil, and T&D operators to identify challenges and lessons learned in AI, asset performance, digital work execution, and more.
- Developed a balanced scorecard and five-pillar framework covering:
- (1) Infrastructure & Data Interoperability,
- (2) Initiative Planning,
- (3) Workforce Readiness,
- (4) Operational Efficiency,
- and (5) Business & Financial Performance.
- Validated metrics across three levels: descriptive, diagnostic, and predictive—enabling application across all maturity stages.
- Created initiative-specific examples (e.g., AI deployment, eWPs) to demonstrate how utilities can measure impact and scale.
Result
- Delivered an industry-first metrics playbook linking digital enablers to value outcomes across utility functions.
- Equipped utilities to evaluate digital investments through lenses of readiness, progress, and impact—beyond traditional ROI.
- Supports data-driven scaling of digital programs and defensible capital planning.
