Challenge
An electrical service provider experienced a serious injury incident during storm response, exposing gaps in its safety program. The existing training approach required significant improvements to better address the safety behaviors of crews, supervisors, safety observers, and trainers. A comprehensive overhaul was needed to enhance field safety practices and reduce future incidents.
Process
- Established assessment criteria in collaboration with legal counsel and leadership
- Conducted 28 field assessments of over 120 workers to evaluate behaviors contributing to safety incidents
- Identified eight key recommendations, including a full transformation of the training program
- Held twelve working sessions with subject matter experts and leaders to revise the safety program manual, success measures, and assessment framework
- Developed targeted training content with field crews to illustrate correct and incorrect safety behaviors
Result
- Achieved the company’s best recorded safety performance 13 months after the assessment
- Increased safety manual usage by 400% by converting to a highly visual digital format with improved content accessibility
- Implemented six just-in-time and ongoing learning modules to reinforce workforce training
- Developed and launched a comprehensive pre-job brief focused on critical hazards and mitigation strategies
- Streamlined training completion tracking between the learning management system and reporting database
