NXT GEN® Training for Safety Performance Improvement​

Challenge

A major fossil fuel hydroelectric generation company faced challenges with the clarity and consistency of its Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) program expectations and standards. In 2020, there were 57 LOTO events and 13 Level 1 events, highlighting gaps in training and compliance. Existing LOTO training was primarily instructor-led, leading to inconsistencies in how standards and expectations were conveyed. Additionally, procedural guidelines were not always accurately reflected in training modules, further contributing to misunderstandings and compliance risks.

Process

  • Conducted 17 working sessions to assess existing LOTO programs, identify gaps, and refine new training modules
  • Incorporated best practices from field experts into training content and procedural guidance
  • Developed immersive training content using first-person and observational perspectives with embedded procedural guidance
  • Integrated expertise from plant and program leaders to ensure alignment with real-world applications
  • Designed scenario-based learning modules for deployment within the existing learning management system

Result

  • Reduced LOTO events from 13 to zero Level 1 events in less than a year
  • Decreased instructor-led training time by over 300 hours annually
  • Updated LOTO processes and documentation to reflect real-world application based on field experience
  • Created an educational video to support the rollout of the fleet-wide locks program
  • Built a reference library of videos and simulation content for on-demand learning
  • Engaged more than 40 subject matter experts in training content development
