Challenge
ScottMadden was retained by a major Canadian integrated electric company to prepare a comprehensive comparison of its operations to industry wide benchmarks. The report was to be used to establish a “gap-based” approach to annual business planning.
Process
- Selected critical performance metrics representing a “balanced scorecard” approach to performance assessment (44 unique metrics)
- Identified Canadian and U.S. peer groups for each benchmark (multiple peer panels)
- Collected industry performance data for all metrics and calculated industry median and top-quartile scores
- Compared the client’s performance to industry performance and charted and graphed the results in a manner to facilitate decision-making
Result
- A formal benchmarking report that was submitted by executive management to the company’s board of directors
- The report was used to lay the foundation for a gap-based approach to business planning
