Energy supply in the United States is on the cusp of significant changes. Renewables offer one solution to a complex set of issues by providing a means to hedge the conventional supply portfolio, both geographically and by fuel source.

Renewable portfolio standards (RPS) are proliferating and increasing in scope. These standards now apply to 40% of the U.S. load, one-third of the standards have been adopted in the past two years, and a Federal Renewable portfolio standard is becoming a definite possibility.
