ScottMadden Insight: Capital Project Management Organization and Capability Assessment

January 04, 2012 | Atlanta, GA

Delivering Strategic Results with Effective Capital Project Management Programs...

ScottMadden, Inc., a leading general management consulting firm, recently published “Capital Project Management Organization and Capability Assessment.” This document provides a brief overview of ScottMadden’s approach to evaluating project management organizations.

The capital project landscape is increasingly difficult to traverse. Project construction and material costs continue to escalate, the environmental and regulatory picture remains unclear, and project schedule compression has become the norm. In response, project organizations have undergone transitions to adapt to today’s difficult economic climate. As a result, capabilities have been outsourced, while fresh talent has become difficult to identify.

At a recent conference, Jake Jacobi, partner and clean tech and infrastructure practice leader at ScottMadden, said, “In an environment of increasing construction project complexity and uncertainty, companies with the ability to build successful project management capabilities will gain a strategic advantage that can reduce project cycle time, lower costs, and provide schedule stability.” Joe Niedermuller, a ScottMadden consultant and registered PMP, added, “Assessments often focus on adoption of leading project management practices, with little thought given to the business infrastructure that supports the capital program. Assessments need to recognize the implications of adopting new practices in order that the organization may lay the foundation for a successful transformation.”

An effective project management program is the key to delivering strategic results. ScottMadden understands that every organization has a unique set of projects and capabilities; there is no one-size-fits-all project management model.

For nearly 30 years, ScottMadden has been a leader in energy consulting, serving more than 200 energy organizations, including 90% of the top 20, and has completed thousands of successful projects.
