An Introduction to Smart Grid Communications

The smart grid vision includes the facilitation and management of data and applications needed for real-time, end-to-end communications between utilities and end users.

Since a successful Smart Grid implementation begins with a successful communications network and systems architecture that function as the backbone of a Smart Grid system, the future of Smart grid implementation hinges on understanding the types of communications networks currently being developed, marketed, and adopted by, utilities, as well as understanding the business impact of these network systems.

There are a variety of networks available for improving the communication between utilities and consumers and making the best choice can vary by location and existing technology. Grid optimization can come from improvements in communication by the utility companies, end-users, and everyone in between, so being grounded in the business aspects of the various networks is important.

The purpose of this document is to provide a brief overview of the development of Smart Grid communications and forecast future changes and growth in this market.
