Solar Utility PPA, EPC and O&M Assessment

Jake Jacobi, Rick Starkweather | September 2010

Three of the main elements involved in photovoltaic solar (PV) installations are the management of purchase power agreements, EPC contracts for PV construction, and post installation operations and maintenance (O&M) management. Securing a good PPA is often one of the most challenging elements of solar project development, but since these agreements are a critical part of planning a successful solar project they warrant special attention.  PV projects are typically constructed and started up through EPC contracts (engineering, procurement and construction), many times with the solar PV system manufacturer or OEM. There are specific success factors that can make the difference between a successful or poorly executed EPC contract, and after the project is implemented, O&M planning and execution strategies are needed to ensure the PV assets operate at design conditions. This document provides an explanation of the basic elements of all three of these key components to successful solar project implementation.
