Case Study: Warehouse Management System Vendor Selection

ScottMadden assisted a large southeastern electric utility develop user requirements for a warehouse management system (WMS) and create a formal request for information (RFI)/business case for initial vendor selection.

Challenge
  • uManagement desired to improve inventory planning and materials management across its fossil generation system to address the following issues:
    • Order retrieval and processing was unorganized and time consuming
    • Shipping documents were manually generated
    • Inventory records did not always reflect current balances and locations
    • Inventory was not easily visible across the system
    • The accounting transaction audit trail was inadequate
    • Transaction access and tracking security was unsatisfactory
Solution
  • uDocumented WMS system functionality requirements
  • Identified more than 200 potential candidates and selected the 20 top vendors from the list
  • Used the RFI process results to facilitate final vendor selection and develop a short list of highly qualified candidates
  • uCreated a quantitative and qualitative business case for WMS implementation
