Ed Baker has been a consultant, and with ScottMadden, since 2001.  He specializes in operations improvement, financial analysis and modeling, outsourcing advisory services, and fleet playbooks/management models. He is a graduate of the Babcock Graduate School of Business at Wake Forest University, where he was a Babcock Scholar.  While at Wake Forest, he won the Kiplinger Prize for academic achievement and leadership potential, the Robert N. White Award for most outstanding management consulting practicum project and the Babcock Award for managerial potential, based on scholastic performance, leadership, and integrity. Prior to attending graduate school, Ed was vice president of professional banking with a North Carolina bank. He earned a B.S. in financial management at Clemson University, cum laude.

  • For a top ten fleet operator, managed the development of its playbook/management model to operate as a fleet, including establishing corporate functional oversight and clarifying accountabilities
  • For multiple gas LDCs, managed large multi-team projects to assess their current state processes, functions and organizations, and led teams through developing future state designs and business cases to support implementation
  • Developed root cause hierarchy and metrics to identify key drivers of performance for a non-regulated division of a large gas utility; implemented new metrics along with newly designed reporting tools
  • Developed a business plan outline for an international nuclear operating company embarking on its new build program; outlined the contents of a business plan, reviewed the current state, conducted an assessment of critical gaps, and recommended a roadmap for populating the business plan
  • Worked with a large gas and electric company to assess its technical training function and outline a future state vision aligned with its strategic direction
  • Developed a “playbook” to document a large generation company’s approach to building new nuclear generation; assisted with the marketing and launch of a new business line, including responding to opportunities to provide this  service to others
  • Managed a 23-team functional area gap review and improvement plan for an underperforming nuclear station’s alignment with their operational “Playbook”
  • Assisted a large field services company define its business requirements and led the RFI/RFP development and selection process for a mobile automated workflow solution
  • Worked with the low carbon development group of a large energy company to facilitate the creation of its mission, vision, guiding principles, scope, and goals.  Documented a standard methodology for performing mergers and acquisitions in addition to the construction of renewable power generation and energy storage. Developed the process for conducting technology research and providing market intelligence to decision makers and influencers within senior management
  • Worked with an 1,800-employee company to define and document their core business processes into an operational “playbook”
  • Managed a 17-team, 50+ member project for a large utility merger that assessed each company’s processes and organization gaps, identified best practices, and outlined implementation plans
