Chris Vlahoplus

Partner and Clean Tech & Sustainability Practice Lead


Chris Vlahoplus is a partner with ScottMadden and leads the firm's clean tech and sustainability practice area. He has been a management consultant for 18 years, specializing in strategic and business planning, organizational restructuring and management models. He has assisted more than 25 companies. His primary areas of focus include nuclear power generation, electric utility and gas LDC operations. Chris earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of South Carolina, an M.S. in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining ScottMadden, Chris worked in nuclear safety at Duke Power Company.

  • Supported a corporate-wide cost reduction effort including a major restructuring of the corporate support functions (HR, finance and accounting, corporate communications and public affairs, risk management, corporate development and corporate strategy)
  • Provided integration support for the merger of two electric utilities, including service company formation
  • Supported the development of a strategic plan for an unregulated Genco
  • Supported the development of a capital prioritization and allocation method across business units for an integrated utility
  • Performed benchmarking studies for several distribution and transmission organizations, including a collaborative panel of distribution utilities
  • Established a key performance indicator structure for an energy delivery organization. The project included distribution, transmission, customer service and energy services
  • Implemented a fleet management approach and process standardization for two unregulated fossil generation companies
  • Supported a nuclear fleet-standardization effort covering standard processes, organization and staffing
  • Developed a business/marketing plan for a newly established nuclear operating company, which included a plant acquisition evaluation model for candidate screening, a due diligence process and support for the evaluation of two proposed nuclear management services contracts and organization design
  • Facilitated the development of a business plan and project roadmap for nuclear new-build
  • Helped organize and manage an improvement team focused on improving an under-performing nuclear station
  • Completed organizational realignment of a multi-site nuclear generation group including workload based staffing plan
